Former U.S. Marine Tommy Riordan (played by Tom Hardy) visits his father, Paddy Conlon (played by Nick Nolte), who is a recovering alcoholic. Tommy had to run away from Paddy with his dying mother when he was just a boy due to Paddy having previously been an abusive alcoholic. Tommy learns about a winner-takes-all mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament called Sparta in which the winner will receive $5 million. Tommy asks Paddy to help him train for the tournament.

Tommy’s older brother, Brendan (played by Joel Edgerton), is a high school physics teacher and former MMA fighter, who is struggling to provide for his wife Tess (played by Jennifer Morrison) and their two daughters. He had to mortgage his house to pay for his younger daughter’s open heart surgery. Brendan needs to increase his income, so he battles amateur fighters for money. When Brendan’s MMA life spreads around the school, he is suspended without pay. Brendan now without any income seeks the MMA training Frank Campana (played by Frank Grillo) and begins competing in smaller venue fights. After the fighter Frank planned to enter into the Sparta tournament is injured, Brendan convinces Frank to enter him as a replacement.
Pushing through. Life has its ups and downs, Brendan needed to take care of his family so he did what was necessary. Despite the school which is his place of employment disagreeing, and suspending him, negating his family’s steady income, Brendan tries to push through. Meanwhile, Tommy finds a similar meaning to pushing through in his way.
